How Do I Stop Estate Agents From Calling Me?
If you're thinking of selling your home in Oxford, Kidlington or Botley, there's a good chance you've dipped a toe into the property market by registering with a few estate agents.
Or maybe more than a few.
And now your phone won’t stop ringing.
It starts with a polite check-in. Then another call the following week. Before long, you're dodging numbers you don’t recognise and wondering, Why are all these agents bothering me?
In this article, I’ll explain what’s happening and more importantly, how to stop estate agents calling.
Why Do Estate Agents Keep Calling in Oxfordshire?
Most estate agents aren’t trying to pester you. The issue is that every agent in Oxfordshire is probably using a CRM system, which is a bit of software that nudges us to follow up with people we’ve spoken to.
If you’ve registered with ten agents and each one only calls you once a month, you’re still facing ten calls a month. That’s more than two a week. It feels relentless. And from your point of view, it is.
We’re all being polite. We’re all being “light touch”. But to you, it’s just one more unwanted phone call on your lunch break.
Are You on a ‘Nuisance Call List’ from Estate Agents?
Let’s be clear. You’re not being cold-called out of the blue. You registered your details. You probably clicked a portal or filled in a form saying “Please let me know if something suitable comes up”. And that form? It fed into a database.
The result? Your name pops up in someone’s call list with a note like:
“No answer – try again in a week.”
So if you’re avoiding the calls, it’s actually keeping you in the loop. Because if we don’t speak to you, we don’t know what you want and the CRM tells us to try again.
How to Stop Estate Agents Calling You
Want the Calls to Stop? Here's the Magic Sentence:
“Thank you for calling. I won’t be moving for at least five years, but I appreciate you thinking of me.”
You don’t need to be aggressive. You don’t need to block numbers. Just say it clearly. A good agent will update their CRM with:
“Not moving – long-term – no further contact needed.”
And just like that, the calls stop.
It’s no different from telling your hairdresser you’ve moved, or your GP that you’re no longer at that address. You’ve got to let us know.
But What If I Change My Mind?
No problem. Any decent agent will happily pop you back on the list if your circumstances change, whether you decide to sell your property in Botley unexpectedly, or start booking a valuation in Kidlington after all.
We’ll be here. We just won’t chase you unless you ask us to.
What to Do If Estate Agents Won’t Stop Calling?
Ah yes. The corporates are a different ball game.
The ones with call centres full of 19-year-olds tasked with dialling through 200 numbers a day, asking, begging to book valuations.
They’re not interested in your story, your timeline or your polite decline. They’re paid to book appointments and the more they book, the better they look.
If you’ve asked to be removed and they keep calling, you can:
- Email the branch manager directly (often found on their website).
- Submit a complaint to their head office.
- Report persistent unsolicited calls to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
You have a right to opt out. And if they ignore you, there are official channels to deal with that.
